WCBL Game Recaps: July 29th

Lethbridge Bulls vs Okotoks Dawgs |  3 – 5

In the rubber match of a three-game set between the Okotoks Dawgs and Lethbridge Bulls, it was the Dawgs who were victorious, taking the ballgame 5-3. The victory brings the Dawgs record to 37-11 as they hold a 10 game lead over the second place Medicine Hat Mavericks. The Bulls fall to 27-23 for the season, sitting third in the West Division.

Jared Spearing received the start for Okotoks, tossing a dominant performance where he lasted six innings and struck out three, allowing only two hits. Tyler McWillie came in relief of Spearing in the seventh, throwing a clean inning where he didn’t allow a hit. Things started to get dicey for the Dawgs when Matt Merril came in to start the eighth inning, walking three straight batters before he was pulled for Galen Manhard after not recording an out. Manhard tossed the final two innings for the Dawgs, eventually earning the victory.

Outfielder, Jacob Melton gave the Dawgs the late lead after breaking a 3-3 tie in the eighth inning, crushing a two-run homer to put Okotoks ahead 5-3, which stood as the final score. Melton finished the ballgame 2-3 with three RBI’s.

Regina Red Sox vs Weyburn Beavers |  8 – 3

The Regina Red Sox defeated the Weyburn Beavers 8-3, bringing their record to 33-14 as they sit in first in the East Division with a 1.5 game lead over the second place Swift Current 57’s. The loss brings the Beavers record to 27-19, good enough for third in the East Division.

It wasn’t the start Grant Dowty wanted when he took to the mound for the Red Sox, tossing just 1 2/3 innings, allowing three earned runs, before the bullpen took over. Max Ludka, Heibert Romero, Dolan Kunkel and Nick Ferngren all pitched in the ballgame, shutting down the Beavers, as they didn’t allow a run in the 7 1/3 innings they pitched.

Ryan Eastburn collected four RBI’s in the victory for Regina, finishing 3-4 with a walk, a double and two runs scored.

Melville Millionaires vs Swift Current 57’s |  4 – 6

The Swift Current 57’s continue to climb the standings in the East Division as they downed the Melville Millionaires 6-4, bringing their record to 33-17. The 57’s only trail the first place Regina Red Sox by 1.5 games as we head into the final games of the season.

Logan Garza was the starter for Swift Current, throwing five innings of work, striking out five, before Graeme Cherry came in relief to throw the next three innings, where he only allowed two hits, striking out two. Garrett Alexander finished things off, coming in to pitch the ninth inning, where he picked up the save.

Breyden Eckout crushed a solo homer in the victory, finishing the ballgame 1-4.
