WCBL Game Recaps: July 17th

Lethbridge Bulls vs Moose Jaw Miller Express (GAME ONE) |  6 – 2

In game one of a double-header between the Lethbridge Bulls and Moose Jaw Miller Express, it was the Bulls coming away with the victory taking down the Miller Express 6-2.

Kaleb Warden and Dylan Borman each crushed homers in the victory as Warden finished the night 1-3 with a walk and an RBI as Borman finished 1-3 with a walk and two RBI’s.

For Warden, the home run was his 10th of the year, driving up his stock in MVP voting as we head down the stretch. Warden now has a stat line of .414/.494/.733 with 10 homers, 13 doubles and a league leading 56 RBI’s.

Ben Erwin received the start for Lethbridge as he tossed the first six innings of the seven inning contest, allowing only four hits before Evan O’Toole came in to complete the victory, tossing the final inning of work, striking out two.

Lethbridge Bulls vs Moose Jaw Miller Express (GAME TWO) |  7 – 2

It was a double-header sweep for the Lethbridge Bulls as they downed the Moose Miller Express 7-2 in game two. The win brings the Bulls record up to 21-18, good enough for second in the WCBL’s West Division. The loss drops the Miller Express to 20-18 for the season as they sit in fourth in the East Division, but look to be a lock to hold onto the final playoff position, leading the Melville Millionaires by 6.5 games.

Bulls third baseman, Dylan Borman finished the game two 3-4 with a walk and a double, as second baseman Ashton Roy went 2-3 with a walk, two runs scored and an RBI.

Connor Breding tossed a complete game for Lethbridge, throwing seven innings, allowing only three hits and two earned runs, while striking out four Moose Jaw batters.

Melville Millionaires vs Regina Red Sox (GAME ONE) |  0 – 1

In the first game of the double-header between the two teams, the Regina Red Sox topped the Melville Millionaires 1-0 in a pitching dual that saw only three hits in the ballgame.

Red Sox third baseman, Samuel De La Cruz picked up the only hit for his club as he finished the game 1-2. Ryan Eastburn scored the only run of the ballgame which came off of a wild pitch in the second inning.

It was a team effort on the mound for the Red Sox as four different pitchers tossed in the seven inning contest with Fernando Burgos starting things off, tossing three innings of work, striking out three Millionaires batters. Jackson Cofer came in relief to toss the fourth and fifth innings before Max Ludka and Heibert Romero completed the final two.

Melville Millionaires vs Regina Red Sox (GAME TWO) |  7 – 8

The bats woke up in game two of the days double-header between these two teams as the Regina Red Sox picked up with double-header sweep over the Melville Millionaires, winning the ballgame 8-7.

Red Sox shortstop, Robbie Wilkes went 3-4 in the victory with an RBI and a runs scored, as his teammate, Griffin Keller finished 1-1 with a walk, a triple and an RBI.

Six different Regina pitchers threw in the ballgame with Matt Goertzen receiving the start, tossing three innings of work, allowing three earned runs.

Medicine Hat Mavericks vs Okotoks Dawgs |  11 – 8

The Medicine Hat Mavericks took down the first place Okotoks Dawgs with an 11-8 victory, bringing their record up to 20-19 as they now sit in fourth of the WCBL’s West Division. The Okotoks Dawgs fell to 27-10 after the loss and now only lead the second place Lethbridge Bulls by seven games.

Mavericks catcher, Colton Wright had a terrific day at the plate as he finished the ballgame 4-5 with a double and three runs scored, while Nolan Rattai also put together quite the performance, going 2-4 with a double and three runs scored.

Seven different Mavericks pitchers were turned to in the victory with Garrett Nicholson getting the start, but it wasn’t the outing he was looking for as he only got through one inning of work, allowing 3 runs. Nathan Stark highlighted the Mavericks pitching corpse as he threw three innings, allowing no hits while striking out six Dawgs batters.

Swift Current 57’s vs Yorkton Cardinals |  8 – 1

The Swift Current 57’s picked up the victory over the Yorkton Cardinals by a score of 8-1, bringing their record up to 24-15 for the season, good enough for third in the East Division as they only trail the first place Regina Red Sox by three games. The Cardinals fall to 3-33 on the season, sitting in last place in the entire WCBL.

Vinny Margiotta of the 57’s finished the victory over the Cardinals going 2-3 with a walk, a double and three RBI’s.

Swift Current starter, Tyler Murphy tossed a complete game in his dominant outing as he only allowed three hits while striking out nine.

Fort McMurray Giants vs Weyburn Beavers |  7 – 6

The Fort McMurray Giants picked up a huge victory, downing the Weyburn Beavers 7-6 as they find themselves in third place of the WCBL’s West Division. The loss drops the Beavers to 23-12 as they now sit behind the Regina Red Sox for top spot in the East Division by two games.

Giants shortstop, Cam Sanderson went 3-4 with a walk, an RBI and a run scored in the win as Eric Meyer drove in a couple runs, finishing 1-4.

After receiving the start for the Giants, Keith Manby only got through 4 2/3 innings as he allowed seven hits and six earned runs. Tucker Sorenson came in relief tossing 2 1/3 innings, before Brady Wilson and Tristian Richardson each threw an inning each to finish things off.
