WCBL Game Recaps: July 14th

Melville Millionaires vs Edmonton Prospects |  2 – 10

The Edmonton Prospects won their fifth straight game as they downed the Melville Millionaires 10-2. The win brings the Prospects record to 19-20, but still remain out of the playoff picture in the WCBL’s West Division.

Prospects outfielder, Pierce Blohowiak went 3-4 with two doubles, a triple and three RBI’s in the win, while shortstop Javier Ramirez also put together a great performance, finishing the ballgame 3-4 with two doubles, a triple and three runs scored.

Six different pitchers threw for Edmonton in the win, but it was Austin Herrington getting the start as he tossed five innings, allowing only two hits, adding two strikeouts to his credit.

Regina Red Sox vs Yorkton Cardinals |  17 – 1

After notching their third win of the season in Saturday’s contest with the Moose Jaw Miller Express, the Yorkton Cardinals fell to the Regina Red Sox 17-1, bringing their record down to 3-31 for the season, as the Red Sox improve to an impressive 24-10, taking top spot in the East Division.

Red Sox designated hitter, Griffin Keller had a great ballgame as he finished the night going 4-5 with a walk, a double and three RBI’s.

Austin Alarid received the start for Regina tossing eight innings of work while striking out 12, before handing things off to Dolan Kunkel in the ninth, who allowed zero hits and struck out two of the three Cardinals batters he faced.

Swift Current 57’s vs Lethbridge Bulls |  5 – 7

The Lethbridge Bulls defeated the Swift Current 57’s at Spitz Stadium, taking the ballgame 7-5 as they find themselves on a mini two-game win streak. The win jumps Lethbridge back into second place in the West Division, tied with the Medicine Hat Mavericks.

Bulls first baseman, Kaleb Warden continued to impress this season as he finished 2-3 with a walk on the day, hitting a homer while driving in three runs.

Tevin Hall got the start for Lethbridge getting through only 4 2/3 innings of work, before Kyle Poapst came in to toss 1 1/3, with Evan O’Toole finishing things off, throwing the final three innings, striking out five batters.

Okotoks Dawgs vs Fort McMurray Giants |  5 – 6

The Fort McMurray Giants got back to .500 for the season, defeating the first place Okotoks Dawgs 6-5. The win holds the Giants spot in the playoff picture as they only lead the Prospects by half a game.

Giants outfielder, BJ Minarcin drove in a couple of RBI’s in todays contest as he went 1-3 with a walk, while designated hitter, Gunner Rainey also drove in a run, finishing 1-3 with a double.

Ike Buxton was on the mound to begin things for the Giants, but was chased after allowing four earned runs in the first two innings, allowing Jordan Williams to come in and steal the show as he tossed 3 1/3, innings, striking out three and allowing only two hits. Tucker Sorenson, Tyler Hodder and Tristian Richardson also pitched in the ballgame to finish things off.

Medicine Hat Mavericks vs Brooks Bombers |  7 – 1

The Medicine Hat Mavericks continue to roll as they defeated the Brooks Bomber 7-1 for their fifth straight win, bringing their season record to 19-18, as they currently sit tied for second with the Lethbridge Bulls in the WCBL’s West Division.

PJ Garcia and Nolan Rattai each drove in two runs and collected two hits in the victory, as they both finished 2-5 on the night with a run scored.

Derek Eubanks was on the mound for the Mavericks to start things off, tossing the first five innings, striking out two, before turning to three different pitchers to finish things off.

Moose Jaw Miller Express vs Weyburn Beavers (GAME ONE) |  0 – 6

In the first game of the days double-header, the Weyburn Beavers defeated the Moose Jaw Miller Express 6-0.

Beavers outfielder, James McCallum finished the ballgame without an official at-bat, but collected three walks and a run scored, as his teammate, Tyler Sandoval went 1-3 with an RBI.

Receiving the start was Beavers righty, Sawyer Strickland who pitched five complete innings, striking out six batters, before handing things off to Shandon Herrera to toss the final two innings of the seven inning contest.

Moose Jaw Miller Express vs Weyburn Beavers (GAME TWO) |  12 – 5

In game two of the double-header, the Moose Jaw Miller Express snagged the victory 12-5, bringing their record to 20-16 for the season as the Weyburn Beavers fell to 23-10, falling behind the Regina Red Sox who took top spot over in the East Division.

Finishing the ballgame 2-3 with a walk and two RBI’s was Moose Jaw shortstop, Andres Garza, who had a terrific day at the plate. His teammate, catcher, Cole Warken also impressed in the batters box, finishing the ballgame 2-3 with two walks and an RBI.

Ethan Soroka was the winning pitcher for the Miller Express, tossing four innings while striking out three before three different Moose Jaw pitchers finished things off for the club.
