WCBL Game Recaps: July 10th
Okotoks Dawgs vs Medicine Hat Mavericks | 2 – 8
After the blowing the game in the bottom of the ninth in last nights ballgame against the Okotoks Dawgs, the Medicine Hat Mavericks did not want another one to slip away. The two teams met again tonight for game two of this home and home series, and it was the Mavericks who came out on top this go around, defeating the first place Okotoks Dawgs 8-2. The win holds the Mavericks in a playoff position in the WCBL’s West Division, as they sit in fourth place behind the Fort McMurray Giants and only trail the second place Lethbridge Bulls by two games.
Mavericks first baseman, Sal Rodriguez was spectacular at the plate this evening, going 2-4 with a homer, three RBI’s and 2 runs scored.
Garret Nicholson received the start for Medicine Hat, tossing seven innings, striking out six batters and only allowing two hits, before Bryce Libke and Hunter Cooper each pitched an inning to complete the victory.

Yorkton Cardinals vs Weyburn Beavers | 2 – 11
The Yorkton Cardinals struggles continue as they suffered their 27th loss of the season to the Weyburn Beavers by a score of 11-2. Yorkton now sits with a record of 2-27 for the season and are not showing signs of improvement as they are currently riding an 11 game losing streak.
It was a huge victory for the first place Beavers as they currently find themselves in a tight race atop the WCBL’s East Division with both the Regina Red Sox and the Swift Current 57’s creeping their way up the standings.
Weyburn designated hitter, Jack Barrie continued his tear on WCBL pitching, going 1-4 with two RBI’s and a run scored. Barrie is making a name for himself around the league and finds himself in the MVP race as we head into the final stretch of the season. The big slugging righty leads all batters in home runs with 12, as the next best sits with only eight, and holds a slash line of .320/.419/.740 for the season.
Chase Stratton was the man on the mound for the Beavers to start things off, allowing only one hit through his seven innings of work, striking out 11 Yorkton batters. Manny Guzman came in relief, tossing the final two innings as he struck out three and only allowed one hit as well.

Edmonton Prospects vs Swift Current 57’s | 4 – 2
The Edmonton Prospects crushed the Swift Current 57’s four-game win streak as they snagged the ballgame 4-2. It was a much needed win for the Prospects as they currently find themselves out of the playoff picture in the West Division after falling off as of late.
Three different Edmonton batters clobbered homers today, as Javier Ramirez, Nolan Walker and Jake MacDonald all went deep for solo shots.
Hunter Boyd pitched a complete game for the Prospects as he only allowed seven hits during his time on the mound, while striking out five. Boyd now holds an ERA of 1.38, which leads the entire league (min. 35 IP) and sits with a record of 5-0 with 40 strikeouts in 52 innings pitched.

Melville Millionaires vs Fort McMurray Giants | 1 – 8
The Fort McMurray Giants got back in the win column as they defeated the Melville Millionaires 8-1, keeping them in third place in the West Division. The loss drops the Millionaires to 13-18 for the season and now sit 3.5 GB of a playoff spot behind the Moose Jaw Miller Express in the East Division.
Third year Giant, Chase Adkison went 2-3 in the victory, collecting a double, two RBI’s and a runs scored, as Cam Sanderson also went 2-3 for Fort McMurray with two walks and an RBI.
On the mound for the victorious Giants was lefty, Tucker Sorenson, who threw six innings and struck out four, before Jordan Williams, Brady Wilson and Ike Buxton each tossed an inning each to finish things off.

Brooks Bombers vs Moose Jaw Miller Express | 7 – 11
The Moose Jaw Miller Express claimed the victory over the Brooks Bombers, winning the ballgame 11-7. The win pads the lead over the Melville Millionaires for the final playoff spot in the East Division as they now lead by 3.5 games.
The bats were alive for Moose Jaw as they collected 17 hits on the night. Designated hitter, Alex Orenczuk did most of the damage, going 3-5 with two doubles and two RBI’s. His teammates, Ty Lightly and Cole Warken also collected three hits in the swing-off.
Receiving the start for the Miller Express was Chicago, Illinois native, Matt Jackson. The big right-hander tossed 5 1/3 innings, striking out eight before Tyler Sheridan, Reece Helland and Jack Gamba finished things off.
